Colonial statues, commonly called colons, are a genre of wooden figurative sculptures that originated during the colonial period. Painted in bright colors, they often depict European colonial officials or Europeanized Africans. Colons represent a distinct sculptural tradition that originated among the Baule, but today are carved by a number of groups throughout West Africa.
