Baule Tribe, Ivory Coast

H: 19"
Inventory # 10466

Baule Kpan masks represent the portrait of a beautiful woman, and are worn in masquerades that serve various purposes. At the climax of the Goli festival, Kpan appears as the last of all masks, and takes on the role of the senior female, who is the leader among a group of four masqueraders. This leading role is a reference to the influence and importance of women in Baule society.
