Headdresses such as this, with a conical base supporting a round human head belonged to the Oglinye society, which was originlly a warrior society. Nowadays, however, it retains only the idea that its members are strong and courageous. Janus headresses of this type were also used during entertainment festivities and funerals. This piece displays the classic Idoma style, depicting the open mouth showing teeth and vertical keloids on the temples.
