Appliqué Dance Skirt
Kuba Tribe, D.R. Congo

Inventory # 10446

This embroidered raffia dance skirt was made by the Kuba tribe in the D.R. Congo, or one of the numerous subgroups of the Kuba such as the Mapela, Ngeende, of Ngongo. While men loom the fiber, women hand-stitch and decorate the cloth in ingenious and inventive ways. The symbols depicted on Kuba textiles include longevity, protection, and fertility, amongst countless others.
