The 250,000 Dogon people live on a large plateau, with most of the villages situated on cliffs, where the tribe settled in the 14th century. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked, resulting in a rich and diverse artistic culture. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with their original ancestors, which are known as Nommo, and are always depicted in pairs, such as on this piece.
