The balafon is a musical instrument found throughout west and central Africa, comprised of large wooden planks which, when struck, resonate the large, hallow gourds underneath. In Senufo villages, balafon players provide entertainment at most important ceremonies, and are a must at weddings. The balafon has been played in Africa since the 14th century, and it originated in Mali.
