Baule Tribe, Ivory Coast
Wood, hide, rope, cotton textile, wire, resin
Inventory # 10422
The Baule use drums such as this for celebration, ritual, initiation, and ceremony. The wrapping and tying of the animal hide with rope is both aesthetically pleasing and functional—the various layers, knots, and wraps serve to evenly pull the hide tight over the opening, to give the drum a resounding voice. It is unclear if the thick resin was applied for repair, or came as the result of a long period of storage.
