Portrait Mask Mblo
Baule Tribe, Ivory Coast

Inventory # 10736

The most secular of Baule masquerades are known by a variety of names.
Baule Kpan Masks or Mblo Portrait Masks all feature dancers wearing beautiful cloth, and oval face masks, honoring the female leader of a dance troupe.
These peaceful idealized faces are designed portraits of a specific woman.
The dancer illustrates the honored woman who's conducted by the woman herself, or by her representative as he performs. Portrait masks are notably oriented toward the community rather than the spirit world.
