Yaka masks were worn predominantly during initiation ceremonies of the Ngoni and Yiwilla societies. There are different types which correspond to different functions, such as the leader's mask, the ritual expert, and the initiate's mask. The 300,000 Yaka people live along the Wamba River, where they migrated from Angola during the 16th century.
