Stools indicate status, power, and the succession of chiefs and kings. Enormously complex and varied are the forms in which Ashanti stools were made and used. They could be used as casual furniture or in religious rituals. This large stool is the type called Kotoko, or porcupine, the symbol of the Ashanti nation.
